August 5, 2005 – – – – – Zakir Khan


On August 5, 2005, a couple set out for an unknown destination in a small boat;
they were the only two passengers on board.
They had hoped for other fellow travelers,
but God has left that wish unfulfilled to this day.
They remain the only two passengers; there are no others with them.
One sits at the helm of the sail-rigged boat, steering,
while the other simply provides directions;
this is how the boat moves forward.
The one giving directions sometimes wishes to take the helm,
but the helmsman, concerned about the strain it might cause, refuses, saying, "Just keep doing what you are doing;
you do not need to take the helm."

The boat continues its journey toward an unknown destination.
August 5th will return year after year,
And each year, the two of us will tally up new accounts in the ledger of our lives.
Since August 5, 2020, fifteen springs have passed as we journeyed on,
Yet, we have not encountered a fellow traveler.
Despite consulting countless doctors, healers, and traditional physicians—
Including renowned specialists from home and abroad—no such companion has been found.
To this day, the two of us—like a pair of turtledoves—journey on;
We do not know where this voyage will end.
Our journey continues toward an unknown destination.

Somewhere along this journey, one of us might be lost. 
The other might endure unbearable agony until the very end of their days; 
living without the other will be painful, 
yet the survivor must go on living. 
Even so, we both pray to ALLAH that we may bid our final farewell together.
